Battling the Winter Blues Together

As the chill of winter settles in and daylight becomes scarce, I find myself confronted once again by a familiar foe, the Winter Blues or professionally known as: Winter Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I wanted to reach out to you today not only to share my experience but also to let you know that you are not alone in this struggle.

Winter SAD's is triggered by the change in seasons, particularly when the days become shorter and sunlight is limited. For some of us, it feels as if a dark cloud has descended upon our lives, casting a heavy shadow on our emotions. The lack of sunlight affects our serotonin levels, leaving us feeling lethargic, moody, and devoid of motivation.

I must admit that each year, I aim to not let it get to me but then the gloomy weather, constant fatigue, and a sense of hopelessness can make it challenging to carry out daily tasks.

While Winter can be disheartening, I've discovered a few coping mechanisms that have helped me navigate through this season with greater resilience.

  • Firstly, it's important to prioritize self-care. Taking care of our mental and physical well-being becomes even more crucial during these darker months. Engaging in activities that bring joy, such as cooking, listening to uplifting music, or spending time curled up with a good book.. Winter is a time where there is normally less social events so use this time to up your health game.

  • Light therapy has proven to be a game-changer for me. Exposing myself to sunshine for a set amount of time each day has significantly improved my mood and energy levels.

  •  I find still doing this things that bring me joy in summer (such as coffee by the beach, walking the beach) but with WAY MORE CLOTHES ON has a huge impact on my mood. Yes it's cold, yes I whinge but the feeling after is way better than staying in bed and moping around.

  • Exercise. The endorphins, the fresh air, the camaraderie of getting out there with people who have overcome the same head game to get there too! Joining a women’s only gym or outdoor group fitness class can provide you with that sense of belonging you might be missing.

Lastly, please remember that it's okay to ask for help.

Let us embark on this journey together, supporting one another through the darkness until the arrival of spring's renewed hope. In the meantime, let's remember to be gentle with ourselves and extend kindness and understanding to those around us who may also be battling their own winter blues.

I genuinely care about your well-being and want to offer my support in any way possible. If you ever need someone to talk to, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are stronger together!
